Tank cars carry commodities such as:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Caustic soda
  • Corn syrup
  • Liquid fertilizers
  • Ethanol


The cars are inspected prior to being loaded.

Most tank cars range between 10,000 and 30,000 gallons. The cars are labeled per DOT regulations to indicate the coupler type, the results of a tank pressure test, specific car design, and fitting types. The DOT recognizes over ninety different classes of tank car. Cars can be lined with lead, rubber, or an elastomeric material.
